American TV network CBS claimed to have information that Petty had passed away, with the Las Angeles Police Department taking to Twitter to apologise for ‘inadvertently’ issuing information.
However Petty’s death has now been officially confirmed via posts on his social media made by Tony Dimitriades, the longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and on behalf of Petty’s family.
