APOGEE ENSEMBLE THUNDERBOLT INTERFACE
We are beginning to see Thunderbolt audio interfaces slowly making an appearance on the market. This is the new port that’s beginning to phase out FireWire, and there are some really innovative products stepping up their game in computer interfacing. Apogee is certainly one name to watch out for in this arena. When it comes to quality audio interfaces, they have left me astounded with what they have delivered in the new Ensemble Thunderbolt interface.
MAYONES COMODOUS 6 STRING BASS
Poland’s Mayones makes extremely fine, high quality guitars with a very distinctive look and style, great tone woods and amazing playability. But their basses are equally distinctive and high quality. The Comodous 6 is a breathtaking instrument - quite literally, because everyone I showed it to had the same shocked reaction to its sheer size, odd shape and the striking nature of its top. Aahh but as anyone who’s played a Mayones guitar will know, you can’t judge one on looks: it all happens when you pick that first note.
AVID PRO TOOLS 11 TIER 3 PLUGINS
I have been a Pro Tools user since the later stages of Version 4, when MIDI production within the software was diffi cult to say the least, even using the software as a music creation tool, as opposed to a multi-track recorder, was tough.
CASIO XWG1 SYNTHESIZER
Around 6 months ago I got to have a brief look at a pair of Casio synthesizers that got me all excited. It had been years since I had played with a Casio synthesizer and these reignited an old fire in my soul. So, now I am more than happy to have a more in depth look at one of these keyboards again, the Casio XW-G1 synthesizer.
TC ELECTRONIC TRINITY 2 REVERB GUITAR EFFECTS PEDAL
TC Electronic’s Hall of Fame Reverb pedal is one of my all-time favourites, an incredibly versatile yet foot-friendly little stomper that you can use as-is, or with TonePrint — presets made by your favourite artists or even yourself, and beamed to the pedal by holding a smartphone up to your pickups (or byUSB). TC boiled the Hall of Fame down to its barest essentials with the Hall of Fame Mini pedal (with just a lone Reverb knob — all the other controls are handled via TonePrint). The T2 Reverb may share a basic layout with the Hall of Fame, but it’s designed from the ground up with ten exclusive reverbs crafted by TC Electronics and ProGuitarShop’s tone connoisseurs.
QSC TOUCHMIX-16 DIGITAL MIXER
It almost seems like the development of the digital mixing console has been split into two areas in recent years, leaving a large gap in the market. You really have the choice of a large format console that will require you to re-mortgage the house, or a unit that requires an iPad to act as the brain. There’s been no middle ground for some time. A portable digital mixing console that is fully self-contained, and doesn’t require a visit to the bank before you can consider looking. Well, QSChave put an end to this issue with the release of the TouchMix-16.
GODIN MONTREAL PREMIERE
Hailing from Canada, Godin have an interesting setup with six separate factories throughout the country producing their range of acoustic and electric guitars. The thinking is that although there are some added logistics, the smaller factory sizes promotes a more intimate and involved working environment and that is then reflected in the instruments they make.
DV MARK TRIPLE 6 III GUITAR AMP HEAD
I’m sure most of you know about the Mark Bass range of amplifiers. We've reviewed plenty in Mixdown over the last couple of years and they’re renowned for being lightweight and standing out ahead of the pack with their vibrant black and yellow designs. However, if you’re unfamiliar with DV Mark, their electric guitar range of amplifiers, listen up as the new Triple 6 III amp is just one example of how, in a relatively short time, DV Mark have been able to take an Amp and make it shine.
