Johnston, who was heralded as one of the great producers of his time, was perhaps best known for working with the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and Simon and Garfunkel.

Often working from his home, Johnston was credited not only as a producer, but having a solid creative influence on classic recordings such as Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and John Wesley Harding as well as Johnny Cash’s Walk The Line and Simon and Garfunkel’s Sounds Of Silence.

Johnston went on to become a freelance producer later in his career, working with Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, Carl Perkins, Jimmy Cliff and New Riders of the Purple Sage.
