NAMM 2020: Gibson Custom Shop detail new Adam Jones and Tony Iommi signature models

Although the Jones Silverburst Signature model won’t be ready for production in time for NAMM, Gibson’s Custom Shop have confirmed its impending arrival in a recent press release, saying “The Gibson Custom Shop is also working with legendary and multi-talented Tool guitarist artist, sculptor, special effects designer, videographer and producer Adam Jones on recreating his original 1979 Les Paul Custom Silverburst that can been seen live on stage with Adam today in support of their world tour and blockbuster new album Fear Inoculum. More details to come on this project later in 2020.”

As you all probably know, Jones uses a 1979 Les Paul decked in a rare Silverburst finish, which is thought to give the guitar a unique tone due to the weight of the paint applied in the finish. Some even claim that the guitar gets its tone due to a stray nail or screw embedded in the body somewhere – an odd modification, but honestly, what would you expect from someone who plays in Tool?

If you are fanging for something new from the Gibson Custom Shop at NAMM, never fear: Tony Iommi is here. The company have announced a super limited replica run (50 models to be exact!) of the Black Sabbath man’s ‘Monkey’ SG, a heavily modified SG Special from 1964. This includes custom appointments added by Iommi to the guitar, such as the updated tailpiece, monkey sticker, zero fret and low-output humbuckers, as well as a replica of Iommi’s silver cross necklace, a coffin case and ’60s replica case, and even a replica of Iommi’s leather guitar strap. Talk about getting the full package – however, the pricetag is pretty steep. Be warned…

Keep your eyes peeled for both guitars when they land at the Gibson Custom Shop.
