Mixdown’s Picks: PreSonus Eris E5 XT

For this special, we’re focusing on the massive range of studio monitors – the heart and soul of any studio set-up – glancing our eyes over everything from entry level creative reference monitors through to high-end solutions for mixing and mastering professionals.

PreSonus Eris E5 XT

Key Features: For years, PreSonus have dominated the home recording bracket with their range of crisp, compact and affordable Eris studio monitors, specifically designed to satisfy the multi-faceted needs of the modern prosumer. Proving to be the ultimate middle ground in their inventory, the brand’s 2019 run of Eris E5 XT monitors have proven to be one of the biggest selling of their ilk, with the amount of noted artists, producers and content creators spotted using them in the short stint they’ve been on the market only bolstering their impact further.

The Eris 5 EXTs improve on the quality of their predecessors by adding a new EBM waveguide for the tweeter, a superior enclosure and a bigger bass reflex port beneath the woofer, dropping the low-frequency range to a beefy 48hZ. In addition to the bass boost, these upgrades add an improved high-frequency response and an even wider dispersion, with the Eris E5 XTs boasting a considerable sweet spot as a result.

Meanwhile, a trio of acoustic tuning knobs on the backside of the unit allows for simple EQing to suit your room sound, with a low cut-off switch assisting in this process to ensure the Eris E5 XTs sound like they should in any kind of recording environment.

Reflecting the needs of the average user, the E5 XTs are fitted with a range of XLR, balanced TRS and unbalanced RCA inputs on the back of the unit, which is perfect for hooking up everything from a synthesiser or audio interface through to a microphone or turntable. On that note, their rugged and unassuming build makes them suitable for squeezing onto any crammed desktop, shelf or stand you should require to sit them on – as we’ve come to expect from PreSonus, all bases covered.

Mixdown Says: You know ‘em, you love ‘em. These things punch way above their weight, and are more than suitable for any calibre of musician to perform, record and critically listening to audio on – for their price-point, it’s amazing how accurate these monitors sound. The Eris E5 XTs posses a formidable bass response for their size, and the subtle sweetness of the mid-range allows makes extended use a walk in the park; you’ll receive little ear fatigue with a pair of these, even after hours of toil.

On top of all that, the accessibility and uninhibited layout of these monitors really just acts as the icing on the cake: these truly are some of the most utilitarian monitors on the market today, and their immense popularity speaks volumes.

Overall: They’re literally some of the biggest selling studio monitors of the modern era – what else is there to say? Whether you’re just getting started with production, podcasting or even just need a quality set of speakers to spin records on, the crisp sound and sheer value of the PreSonus Eris E5 XTs will rise to the occasion.
