Larry Carlton teams up with Sire for new signature series

Words by Will Brewster

A new run of axes for the jazz-fusion titan.

After debuting the range back at NAMM in January, Sire have officially launched the Larry Carlton collection, offering a trio of electric guitars made to suit the specifications of the jazz-fusion legend.

Summary

  • Larry Carlton has teamed up with Sire to launch his own run of signature guitars.
  • The collection is comprised of three models based on classic builds from Fender and Gibson.
  • All models are available as both left-handed and fretless variants.

Consisting of three 335, LP and S-type guitars, each model in the Larry Carlton Sire collection seeks to pay tribute to some of the guitars played by Carlton over his celebrated career alongside the likes of Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan and The Crusaders.

First, there’s the H7, which takes cues from Larry Carlton’s famous Gibson ES-335 and is available in Cherry Sunburst, Vintage Sunburst and Red. With a semi-hollow construction and a laminate maple body with a set mahogany neck, the H7 looks to offer premium quality at a ludicrously affordable price-point.

An ebony fretboard with 22 frets allows for nimble, unrestricted shredding up the neck, while a pair of Alnico 2 humbuckers helps you unlock a myriad of tones, from blues and jazz to dirty funk and all-out raucous rock.

For slinky jazz-fusion stylings, a modded Strat can do no wrong, and Carlton’s S7 looks like it should be more than equipped to live up these tasks. It pairs an alder body with a bolt-on roasted maple neck, and if you’ve got a bit of extra cheese to spend, you can choose between three different flame maple veneer top models.

In the hardware department, the S7 features a steel block two-post tremolo and locking tuners, while electronics come courtesy of three S7 single-coil pickups. For regular finished models, the S7 is available in Three Tone Sunburst and Arctic White finishes, while flame top models can be purchased in Trans Blue, Trans Black and Natural finishes.

Finally, there’s the L7, a Les Paul clone with a flame maple veneer top, mahogany neck and body and an ebony fretboard.

This one’s fitted with Alnico 5 humbuckers, and stays true to the design of Gibson’s famed original with its electronics and switching configuration. It’s also available in a trio of classy finishes: Goldtop, Tobacco Burst and Transparent Blue Burst.

It’s also worth noting that all of these models can be purchased in both left-handed and fretless variants, and man, are we keen to hear how those fretless models sound!

Given the pricing of previous runs from the Sire range, it looks like these Larry Carlton collaborative models are set to be ultra-affordable and highly attainable.

The brand’s signature series with Marcus Miller went absolutely bananas upon landing in Australian stores, and it wouldn’t surprise us if the same thing happened here – let the hype begin.
