During today’s event Bowie’s album Blackstar, which was released in January of 2016, mere days before his death, scooped up statues for every category in which it was nominated, including Best Rock Song, Best Rock Performance, Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

Bowie had previously been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and a Best Short-Form Video award in 1985, but never won in a musical category during his lifetime.

A recently released report from the British Phonographic Industry found that sales of vinyl records in the UK had reached their highest point in 25 years, with Blackstar being the best selling LP of 2016. The album was shortlisted for The Mercury Prize and sold more than double the amount of vinyl as 2015’s bestseller, 25 by Adele.

Bowie’s son, the film director Duncan Jones, took to Twitter to celebrate his father’s win.

Blackstar by David Bowie is out now through Columbia Records/Sony Music Entertainment.
