Dave Smith Instruments announces return to original Sequential name

The new name is a return to the original branding of Smith’s renowned company, which was founded in 1974 as Sequential Circuits. The company quickly made a name for itself as a pioneer in the field of electronic instruments, most notably with the 1978 release of the Prophet-5 – the world’s first fully-programmable polyphonic synthesiser.

“This month marks the 40th anniversary of the Prophet-5,” said Smith. “That’s a huge milestone. And it felt like the right time for us to completely restore the Sequential brand and bring our journey as a company full circle. The name change also reflects the fact that our instruments are the result of a team effort. It’s not just me. It’s the entire company.”

The name “Sequential” and its assets were acquired by Yamaha in the mid-‘80s. Smith founded Dave Smith Instruments in 2002 and in 2015, Yamaha graciously returned the Sequential name its original owner.

“The best part is that we have the same sense of excitement and enthusiasm for making the world a more creative place as we did 40 years ago,” added Smith. “Sequential is back, better than ever.”
