Beastie Boys announce new documentary directed by Spike Jonze

In a similar vein to their two-man speaking tour from last year and the fantastic Beastie Boys Book from 2018, Beastie Boys Story was written with Mike D and Ad-Rock, and will trace the band’s origins and deep-dive into select moments from their career. It’s slated for release via IMAX on April 3, and will see a wider release on April 24 through Apple TV. Jonze has also previously announced that he’ll be releasing an immersive photo book celebrating the hip-hop visionaries this year.

In a joint statement heralding the documentary, Mike D and Ad-Rock celebrated Spike Jonze’s artistic vision and flair behind the lens, saying “There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order. Spike is one of those friends. And even when you don’t recognize anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table. Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.”

Jonze, who directed the band’s ‘Sabotage’, ‘Sureshot’ and ‘Ricky’s Theme’ music videos, added to the Beastie Boys statement, saying “I owe Beastie Boys a lot. One time, they pulled me out of a burning ship, and another time they helped me cheat on my college exam to get into Florida State. So, it was a real privilege to get to reunite with them and help them tell their story.”
