The ABC is launching a new music TV show this weekend

The Sound will be filmed for broadcast by Mushroom Vision and will air each Sunday afternoon at 5.30pm – the same time-slot as the Molly Meldrum-helmed Countdown –  with episodes being made available to stream via iView shortly after.

The show’s debut will be hosted by former Recovery legend Jane Gazzo and Australian actor Bryan Brown, with a different personality expected to join Gazzo each week to assume co-hosting duties. Double J’s Zan Rowe has also signed on as Music News correspondent for the program.

To kick things off this week, The Sound’s debut will feature performances from the likes of Nick Cave (previewing a track from his IDIOT PRAYER concert next week), DMA’S, Mark Seymour & The Undertow, Kate Ceberano, Steve Kilbey and Sean Sennet, Eskimo Joe, BENEE, Lime Cordiale and Jerome Farah.

The program is also set to showcase a curated historical segment called From The Vault, acting as a tribute to some of the performing legacy artists and looking back at some of Australia’s best emerging artists.

In a statement released today, Mushroom Vision’s Michael Gudinski expressed his happiness towards the launch of the program, saying that “I’m incredibly excited to realise my dream to see a music show featuring contemporary Australian music in a prime spot on free-to-air television.

The Sound will feature artists from all walks of our incredible local industry, with more than two thirds of each episode focused on showcasing new songs. I’m thrilled that ABC, the home of iconic programs like Countdown, Recovery and rage, have partnered with us to support local music in such difficult times.”

The Sound airs on ABC on Sunday July 19, 5.30pm.
