SHOW & TELL WITH: JAMES NORBERT IVANYI

What piece of equipment do you have to show us today?

My Fractal Audio AX8, which is a digital guitar and effects modeler and has been the backbone of my touring live rig all year.

How did you come across this particular item?

I’ve been using its studio counterpart, the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx II for about two years. I always loved the idea of having those sounds in a pedal board, which is exactly what they did with the AX8. The guys at Fractal reached out to me and hooked me up with one to use on tour, and I’m absolutely loving it.

What is it that you like about it so much?

It’s lightweight, portable, intuitive and sounds absolutely phenomenal. I’ve never had more compliments on my live tone since taking it out on the road, and it’s extremely heavy duty, and thus far has been running perfectly without a single hitch. It’s also multi-watt which means I can plug it in in any country and have no issues.

How do you use it and how has it shaped the way you write music?

I use it exclusively live on tour where I don’t want to take my analogue rig out. I run it direct to front of house in stereo where possible, and usually have two FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) reference monitors on me. I use it in what’s called the ‘global preset mode’ which allows me to simply tap one button to engage a multitude of amplifiers, effects and expression pedal assignment. It’s certainly allowed me to not worry about the complexities of a live rig and just focus on my playing and being in the moment.

Tell us a little about what you have coming up?

Right now I’m on tour in the UK Then I’ll be kicking off a headlining Australian tour two weeks after we get home to Australia, and will be finishing off the year with a show with Haken in late September before getting to work on some new music.
